The other day I was on Quora — the website that enables people to ask questions and connect with others who have answers.
Sometimes the questions are about ingredients, like: What’s the difference between baking powder and baking soda?
But other times they can be deeply personal. One that caught my eye read: “I am 29, have a useless degree, in debt, want to change career, am completely lost. How can I manage to pursue a new and great life?”
I would point out that simply asking that question is a smart first step.
And I would offer the man who asked it three more questions. They came to me from a very wise old woman I met last year. These questions are useful for anyone who feels lost. And also for those who look like they’re doing okay, but feel like they’re treading water in a lake of boredom. In fact, these three questions are a good gut check for anyone in almost any situation.
Who am I?
Where am I going?
If you can answer them clearly, you’ll see your North Star. If you can’t, your own follow-up questions can guide you to it.
